As academics, we are instructed to communicate according to disciplinary-specific norms. You recognize it: Long sentences, passive voice, and filled with jargon. This is fine for our colleagues, but it poses a barrier for audiences outside our fields. Using plain language allows our reader or listener to understand us without needing to check the dictionary or Google an unfamiliar concept.
