Workshops on Message

Simplify your Message Using “And, But, Therefore” (55+ min)

Thanks to Dr. Randy Olsen and popular science communication books, the And, But, Therefore (ABT) messaging model has gained visibility as way to tell a story about research. Having used the ABT in classes for years, I have made some modifications that resonate with scientists trying to use the tool. In this session, we apply the ABT to your research and ensure that you have a takeaway message you can use immediately.

Clarify Your Narrative with the Research Message Tool (75+ min)

As a researcher, you probably empathize with the cliche that says you can’t see the forest for the trees. In other words, we look at our data for so long, we have trouble seeing what it actually means. If you are  wrestling with how to dissect the key ideas from your theory, methods, data, results, and discussion, the Research Message Tool can help. It guides you to elevate the contextual information that is relevant to your audience, helping you clear away the details that may distract rather than explain.

Crafting Analogies for Clarity (55+ min)

Analogies are an amazing tool for explaining abstract and unfamiliar scientific concepts. However, if they are not well-constructed, they can have their pitfalls and lead to unintended misunderstanding. To address this problem, I developed a 5-step process for developing your own analogies. In this workshop, we apply the process to concepts in your daily work so you can connect with your audiences by using analogies that resonate with them.
