Workshops on Audience
How to “Know” Your Audience (55+ min)
As a scientist, someone may have suggested that you have to “know our audience”. How do you actually get to know people you haven’t even met? In this session, we dig into tips and techniques for learning about your audience so you can connect with them and tailor your presentation to their needs.
Handling Q&A (55 min+)
If you are speaking at an academic conference, remember to prepare for the question and answer (Q&A) segment of your talk. This will be the less scripted portion of your talk, so it is your chance to relax and shine. In this session, we equip you to respond to questions ranging from friendly (e.g. “What did you learn that surprised you?” to combative (e.g. “How does your data justify your conclusion?”.) We will also cover some tips around how to leverage Q&A as a strategy for collaboration.
Listening as a Scientist (2-3 hours)
It is generally recognized that it is a polite social behavior be a good listener. The problem is that we don’t get much training on how to be a good listener. This is especially important in the context of science because listening (or not) could impact theoretical trajectories, methodologies, results, collaborations, and future discoveries. In this workshop, we learn and apply several principles of listening that will definitively improve your effectiveness as a science professional.
