Science policy is a diverse and complex sub-domain of public policy. It includes topics as far ranging as cybersecurity, health information technology, and climate change. This workshop introduces the basics: What is science policy? Who creates it? What is the process? How does science policy get made? How do I get involved?
This workshop series is a “how-to” for STEM researchers who want to engage in the policy process but do not (yet!) have a professional or educational background in doing so.
Policy-Analysis at-a-Glance is the basic level and results in a description of the problem you are addressing with your research.
Policy Analysis 2.0 expands your thinking to consider other dimensions of the problem. It results in an analysis of the problem you are addressing.
Policy Analysis 3.0 focuses on thinking about how your research may be a part of the solution.
One long-standing method of engaging with policymakers is to prepare a written handout summarizing the issue and possible policy solutions. These documents vary in length and format, but in this session, we will learn how to capture your key ideas in one easy-to-read page. Beyond distilling the content that should be included, we will also touch on aesthetic best practices that will increase the odds your document will be read.
A science policy simulation is an interactive learning experience that places participants in particular roles within a scenario. The scenarios create a situation in which the participants have competing interests which requires negotiation to achieve an outcome. To emphasize the science policy focus, they seek out research and data to support their positions. Examples of scenarios include expanding Internet to a rural community and COVID vaccines distribution. Simulations require at least 12 people and a minimum of 2 hours.
This session compares and contrasts scientists with politicians, with a focus on why that makes a difference for how scientists communicate with policymakers.
